Course Outline for CS 236610: Recent Advances in Algebraic and Combinatorial Coding Theory

The course will cover several advanced topics in algebraic and combinatorial coding theory. One of the most exciting breakthroughs in algebraic coding theory in the past decade is a new paradigm for decoding Reed-Solomon codes using bivariate (or multivariate) polynomial interpolation. The first half of the course will be devoted to an in-depth study of this subject. The second half of the cour...

An Introduction to Linear and Cyclic Codes

We shall examine a small aspect of coding theory from an algebraic standpoint, examining the algorithms for decoding and encoding from a theoretical perspective. We assume basic knowledge of finite fields, but we shall introduce the theory of linear codes and built up to the machinery for generating cyclic codes and efficiently encoding and decoding them.

Codes from Algebraic Number Fields

INTRODUCTION The geometry of numbers, coding theory, the Riemann hypothesis the list of key words for this lecture can be read äs a partial history of the Stichting Mathematisch Centrum. The lecture itself attempts to reflect the spirit of the SMC by displaying a new connection between these subjects. Using ideas from the geometry of numbers one can construct a class of codes from algebraic num...

Quantum error-correcting codes from algebraic curves

This chapter discusses quantum error-correcting codes constructed from algebraic curves. We give an introduction to quantum coding theory including bounds on quantum codes. We describe stabilizer codes which are the quantum analog of classical linear codes and discuss the binary and q-ary CSS construction. Then we focus on quantum codes from algebraic curves including the projective line, Hermi...

Search for Good Linear Codes in the Class of Quasi-Cyclic and Related Codes

This chapter gives an introduction to algebraic coding theory and a survey of constructions of some of the well known classes of algebraic block codes such as cyclic codes, BCH codes, Reed-Solomon codes, Hamming codes, quadratic residue codes, and quasi-cyclic (QC) codes. It then describes some recent generalizations of QC codes and open problems related to them. Also discussed in this chapter ...
